Explore Michigan on a Snowmobile

As you travel into Michigan during the winter, you’ll notice snow-covered landscapes from cities like Alpena to Port Huron, and Grand Haven to Cheboygan. Whether you visit takes you into central Michigan, or further north, all the snow means two things: it’s a good idea to pack a heavy coat, and there’s a world of snowmobiling trails open.

You might be an avid enthusiast of snowmobiling, or a complete novice who just happens to be in the area – no matter, you’ll find your fill of snowy fun. Head into Beulah or Traverse City – both cities set north of Cadillac, where you’ll find the Cadillac Trail System. With miles of open and scenic trails, the Cadillac Trail System is one of the most popular in the area, taking you around both Lake Mitchell and Lake Cadillac.

Further south you’ll find Allegan, a charming city easily accessed from Highway 131, and a short drive from Saugatuck. The Allegan Snowmobile Trail System guides you through downtown Allegan, around Lake Allegan, and even as far northeast as Miner Lake and Wayland. Make the drive in from Saugatuck or Grand Haven and explore this exciting trail system.

In the far north, head to Mackinaw City where you’ll find one main snowmobile trail running south into Petoskey and Harbor Springs. One of the most popular trails for snowmobiling is the Indian River Trail System. With 56 miles of neatly maintained trails – groomed by the Indian River Snowmobile Grooming Club – you’ll find plenty of space to enjoy your snowmobile.

East of Ludington, you’ll find yourself in the Manistee National Forest. While excellent for hikes and bird watching at any other time of year, winter is particularly great for snowmobiling. The Manistee Snowmobile Trail System features 332 miles of trails, perfect for a full day of pushing your snowmobile to the limit.

With more than 6,200 miles of snowmobile trails in Michigan, you’re sure to find your path – from state parks and forests to the many acres of privately owned lands in cities like Midland and Mt. Pleasant. Enjoy your snowmobiling adventure through the Great Lakes State.
